Former volleyball star Gabrielle Reece is a total fitness goddess. From images of her at play, at the net while pregnant (she’s got three kids!) to her recent nude photo shoot for ESPN’s The Body Issue (with sculpted surfer husband, Laird Hamilton), we’ve been admiring her powerful physique for years. We’ve always wanted to know how Gabby got those abs and glutes—other than from long games of beach volleyball—and now we have our answer! Even better, we also got some advice about how we can score our own six pack.
At an exclusive press event where she introduced her new HIGHX Training program available at 24 Hour Fitness gyms, Gabby revealed her training philosophy as well as two of her favorite moves. In a nutshell: Forget the crunches. She’s all about functional exercise, as well as super-efficient total-body movements. “The idea was always to do as many functional all-body movements as possible so you can maximize the time you put into your training,” she tells SELF. “The idea of making our bodies move better throughout our everyday lives is the real name of the game.”
These are two of Gabby’s favorite moves for your abs and lower body:
1. Old School Planks
What It Does: This move helps develop core strength.
How to Do It: Start in a forearm plank position. Your elbows should be directly beneath your shoulders, and your body should form a straight line from your head to your feet. Keep your abs tight and spine long, engaging your entire body as you hold the position. Aim for 60 seconds. Rest, then repeat one more time.
2. Squat Jacks
What It Does: This move targets the quads, glutes and hamstrings and focuses on building power and strength.
How to Do It: Stand with your feet hip-width apart and your hands clasped behind head. Hinge your hips back to lower into a half-squat position, this is your starting position. Jump your feet out to the sides while maintaining the squat position. Quickly jump your feet back to the starting position. Continue to jump in and out without standing tall for 30 seconds. Rest, then repeat one more time.
